Abstract

As a PhD student at the Ross School of Business and then as a professor of Entrepreneurship at University of Illinois in Chicago, Ruth Blatt conducted original research on work done outside of standard organizations. She published theory and research on entrepreneurial teams and freelancers in The Academy of Management Review, Frontiers of Entrepreneurship Research, Organization Studies, Academy of Management Annals, Journal of Organizational Behavior, Journal of Management Inquiry, and Journal of Management. Always a music lover, Ruth realized one late night while watching a music documentary that rock bands are small businesses, that they function as self-managed product-development teams, and that they have a lot to teach us about teamwork. She left her academic career to write about rock bands as creative teams and small businesses. Ruth has since written more than 100 articles on teamwork and management lessons from rock bands, rock managers, and concert industry professionals for Forbes.com's leadership channel as well as articles for Psychology Today, TheAtlantic.com, Wired.com, and Huffington Post. She is currently researching a book about the work of creating rock concerts.
