Abstract

From incivility and undermining, to harassment and aggression, researchers have documented the many ways in which people mistreat one another while on the job. Research shows that interpersonal workplace mistreatment is associated with harm to individual targets, bystanders, and organizations. However, less scholarship is focused on understanding the antecedents to workplace mistreatment and ways to intervene – why it happens and what to do about it. This talk will review research my colleagues and I have done to help understand ways to counter workplace mistreatment and build respectful workplaces, as well as research opportunities in this area of organizational studies.
