Abstract
Policy training is a popular tool for sexual harassment prevention because it is a simple and relatively affordable way to demonstrate symbolic compliance with antidiscrimination law. However, despite many public and private sector organizations offering antiharassment training for decades, sexual harassment remains a persistent problem in many workplaces. Using survey, qualitative, and experimental data, my research has shown that antiharassment training can have the unintended consequence of activating traditional gender stereotypes and reinforcing negative attitudes about women. These effects dampen the potential benefits of training and suggest the need for new strategies to combat harassment. In this talk, I will present key findings from my prior research, share preliminary data on a couple of newer projects, and discuss future directions for improving training and reducing gender inequality more broadly.
