Abstract
How are morals manufactured? To start answering this question, I will present my most recent book project titled “Manufacturing Morals: The Values of Silence in Business School Education” (University of Chicago Press). With an initial goal of promoting “better” business standards, few organizations have aimed to produce higher morals as deliberately as the Harvard Business School. Moreover, few have tried doing so for such a long period. The project looks at faculty socialization at HBS as a window into this pursuit. In doing so, the project revisits the apparent contradiction between routines and morals, and uncovers the possible role of silence in shaping morals. The implications of such a model of socialization for studies of higher education and corporations will also be discussed.
