Abstract

My talk will begin with a summary of key studies (a mix of my work and others) that examine the trajectory of health IT adoption in the US healthcare system and the impact of adoption on key performance outcomes. The heart of my talk will focus on lessons learned from other industries in realizing value from technological change in general, and information technology specifically, as motivation for examining key contextual factors that may explain when electronic health records result in performance gains in hospitals. I will cover three of my papers that look at: (1) management quality, (2) hospital-physician integration; and (3) time.
