Abstract

This talk will address two important, related developments: the growth of precarious work and inequality; and the growing influence of corporations (relative to the government and labor). I will first examine how shifts in the balance of power among corporations, labor, and government have led to changes in economic and social inequality (e.g., the rise of low-wage jobs, polarization of the economy, the shrinking of the middle class) throughout different periods, especially since World War II (1945-1975, 1975-2008, 2009-2016). I will illustrate these arguments by empirical analyses of rich democracies, especially Denmark, Germany, Japan, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States.
