Abstract
This interactive session will introduce attendees to the ‘behind the scenes’ principles and practices that shape the CRLT Players work. It will begin with a brief overview of the Players’ nineteen-year history of using applied theatre to support the cultivation of more diverse, equitable, and inclusive working and learning environments in higher education. It will then describe how the Players create and implement their work and why they use the techniques and approaches that they do. Finally, the presenter will engage attendees in portions of an abbreviated sketch development process as a way of thinking about the challenges and opportunities that this modality offers for increasing knowledge and skill in the DEI arena.
Recording & Additional Notes
SARA ARMSTRONG is the Director of the CRLT Theatre Program in the Center for Research on Learning and Teaching at the University of Michigan. In this role, she develops original scripts and facilitation structures, leads sessions focused on equipping individuals and communities with tools to operationalize their commitments to equitable practices, and consults with academic leaders on the ways applied theatre can support their change projects. In her seven years with the Players, she has created work that explores faculty recruitment and hiring, tenure and promotion processes, department politics, sexual harassment in the academy, faculty and graduate student mentoring, student mental health, classroom conflict, and the climate experiences of individuals who hold minoritized identities. Sara holds a PhD from the Interdisciplinary Theatre and Drama program at Northwestern University.
